Authorize initiation

Summary

PRINCE2® requires that Project Board members undertake the following responsibilities collectively for authorizing initiation.



Actions required for authorizing initiation

Review and approve the Project Brief:

  • Confirm the project definition and approach
  • Review and approve the Project Product Description
  • Formally confirm the appointments to the core project management team
  • Review and approve the outline Business Case, particularly the projected business benefits

Approve the Initiation Stage Plan:

  • Approve the plan to develop the Project Initiation Documentation
  • Obtain or commit the resources needed by the Stage Plan for the initiation stage
  • Ensure that adequate reporting and control mechanisms are in place for the initiation stage
  • Set tolerances for the initiation stage
  • Request the necessary logistical support (for example accommodation, communication facilities, equipment and any Project Support) from corporate or programme management
  • Understand any risks that affect the decision to authorize initiation
  • Confirm to the Project Manager that the work defined in the Initiation Stage Plan may start

Communicate:

  • Keep stakeholders (corporate or programme management and other interested parties) informed about project progress by issuing a project initiation notification
