Authority

Project Manager

The authority of the Project Manager is very important as he or she will be managing by exception. However, no plans are perfect and decisions will need to be made to make any necessary modifications.

Decisions and the required authority will be needed over many areas. For example:

  • Finance, resource (personnel and equipment purchase), modifying milestone dates or deliverables

It must be clear what limits of authority the Project Manager does have.
What exactly is the process for making particular decisions?
What personnel should be involved to make the decisions?

More detail on the appointment of the Project Manager is given in the PRINCE2® [see ‘The Complete Project Management plus PRINCE2’] process 'Starting up a Project (SU)’ and the sub-process 'Appointing an Executive and Project Manager (SU1)'.
A description of the team role is provided in the product package.

PRINCE2® is a Registered Trade Mark of the Office of Government Commerce in the United Kingdom and other countries.
