Authorize the project
Summary
PRINCE2® requires that Project Board members undertake the following responsibilities collectively to authorize the project.
Actions required for authorizing the projectApprove the components of the Project Initiation Documentation:
- Confirm that the Business Case is viable, desirable and achievable and meets corporate or programme management expectations and standards. Approve the Business Case
- Confirm that lessons from previous similar projects have been reviewed and incorporated
- Confirm that the Quality Management Strategy will deliver the quality expectations, and approve it
- Confirm that the Configuration Management Strategy will deliver the approach expected, and approve it
- Confirm that the Risk Management [see ‘The Complete Risk Management package’] Strategy will safeguard the project, and approve it
- Confirm that there has been a risk assessment, and that risk response actions are planned
- Confirm the validity and achievability of the Project Plan (and in particular the Project Board’s commitment of the resources requested) and approve it
- Confirm that the Benefits Review Plan covers all expected benefits and approve it
- Confirm that all members of the project management team have agreed their roles (the project management team structure, roles and responsibilities)
- Ensure that the project controls are adequate for the nature of the project
- Ensure that the information needs and timing of communications, as defined in the Communication Management Strategy, are adequate for the nature of the project, and approve it
- Review the tolerances for the project provided by corporate or programme management
- Consider the consistency of the various components and approve the Project Initiation Documentation overall
Communicate:
- Keep stakeholders (corporate or programme management and other interested parties) informed about project progress by issuing a project authorization notification
